ADC unveils Sokoto venue for presidential campaign flag-Off
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has announced the venue for the flag-off of its presidential campaign in Sokoto State, following allegations of intimidation and attempts to disrupt the party’s activities.
Senator Ibrahim Lamido, the ADC’s presidential campaign coordinator in Sokoto State, said the campaign kick-off would take place at the party’s secretariat on Ilorin Road, Sokoto, on Wednesday.
Lamido said party members and dignitaries were preparing for the event, adding that ADC presidential candidate and former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar was expected to arrive in the state on the day of the campaign.
The party had earlier withheld the location of its inaugural presidential campaign amid claims of intimidation and political suppression.
Daily Trust reported that the ADC governorship candidate in Sokoto State, Hon. Manir Muhammad Dan’iya, reportedly escaped unhurt after gunmen opened fire on his convoy near the Sultan Abubakar III International Airport on Friday night.
The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) denied allegations that it was responsible for the attack.
Three days after the incident, an ADC campaign office was reportedly sealed. The party also alleged that the Sokoto State government had denied it access to a suitable venue for the campaign flag-off.
On Tuesday night, Atiku accused the APC and the Department of State Services (DSS) of plotting to disrupt the ADC’s inaugural campaign. The DSS denied the allegation.
In a statement, Lamido said Atiku would arrive at the Sultan Abubakar III International Airport in Sokoto at 9 am.
The statement called on party supporters and members of the public to receive the former vice-president at the airport before proceeding to the campaign venue at No. 1 Ilorin Road, Sokoto.
Lamido also urged party executives across the state’s 23 local government areas and wards, mobilisation coordinators, support groups, women’s organisations and youth groups to activate their structures and ensure strong participation in the event.
