MultiChoice disables GOtv stream App, directs subscribers to decoders
MultiChoice has discontinued its GOtv Stream mobile application, bringing an end to the service that enabled subscribers to watch selected television channels and catch-up programmes on their smartphones and tablets.
A notice displayed on the GOtv Stream website, seen by Very Nigerian on Friday, announced the discontinuation of the service.
The company also directed customers to continue enjoying channels covered by their active GOtv subscriptions through their television decoders.
The development means subscribers will no longer be able to access the GOtv Stream service on their mobile devices.
“GOtv Stream has been discontinued. You can continue enjoying the channels included in your active GOtv package on your GOtv decoder,” the notice reads.
The application is also no longer available for download on Google Play Store and Apple App Store. According to app-tracking platform Chrome Stats, the Android version was removed from Google Play on October 21.
Before its discontinuation, GOtv Stream allowed subscribers to watch selected live television channels, access catch-up programmes and download some content for offline viewing, subject to their subscription packages.
MultiChoice has not explained the reason for the decision or announced a replacement service specifically for GOtv Stream users.
GOtv Stream was launched in Nigeria on December 1, 2023.
The development comes amid a series of changes to MultiChoice’s digital and subscription services following its acquisition by French media company Canal+.
Canal+ announced on September 22, 2025, that its takeover offer for MultiChoice had become unconditional after regulatory approvals, giving it effective control of the parent company of DStv and GOtv.
The acquisition, valued at about $2bn, brought the African pay-TV operator into the Canal+ group, which said the combined business would serve more than 40 million subscribers across nearly 70 countries.
In March 2026, MultiChoice announced plans to discontinue Showmax, its streaming platform, following what it described as a review of its streaming operations.
The company said the decision reflected the need for financial discipline and optimisation of investments, adding that the service had recorded substantial annual losses that were unsustainable.
Showmax subsequently shut down in April, with subscribers directed to DStv Stream to continue accessing available content.
Speaking in October, MultiChoice Nigeria Chief Executive Officer, Kemi Omotosho, said the company was considering another digital streaming product after the Showmax closure.
“We do not want to have too many technologies in the platform, so we are doing an audit of what is the best streaming platform to launch,” TheCable quoted her as saying at a Lagos press briefing.
Omotosho said the company did not want to leave the streaming market without a product but would not announce a launch date until it had selected the appropriate technology.
The discontinuation of GOtv Stream comes as MultiChoice introduces a new subscription structure for its DStv and GOtv services.
Effective November 5, the company replaced its previous package line-up with four options each for the two platforms.
GOtv subscribers can now choose from Easy at N4,000 monthly, Starter at N6,000, Select at N11,000 and Sports at N21,000.
The new DStv packages are Starter at N6,000, Select at N11,000, Sports at N21,000 and Premium at N44,500 monthly.
MultiChoice said the restructuring was intended to simplify its offerings and provide subscribers with more content and flexibility.
