NAFDAC cracks down on substandard products, destroys goods worth over N5bn in Nasarawa

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) on Thursday destroyed unwholesome and substandard products worth more than N5 billion in Nasarawa State. 

The items, seized from different parts of the North-Central region, were targeted to stop the spread of harmful goods across the country.

The fake and unsafe products were collected from Nasarawa, Benue, Kogi, Niger and Plateau States before being destroyed at the Angwan Rere dumpsite in Lafia, the Nasarawa State capital.

During the exercise, NAFDAC Director-General, Prof. Christianah Adeyeye, explained that the products were confiscated during routine monitoring and enforcement activities carried out by the agency’s officers.

She said the operation shows NAFDAC’s commitment to protecting public health and ensuring only safe products reach Nigerian consumers.

Represented by the North-Central Zonal Director, Mr Kenneth Azikiwe, the D-G said the exercise aimed to prevent the dangerous products from re-entering the market and posing risks to public health.

She added that some damaged and expired items were voluntarily submitted by traders, and urged Nigerians to report those producing fake or substandard goods, stressing NAFDAC’s commitment to safeguarding public health.

Nasarawa Commissioner for Security and Safety Matters, Usman Baba, commended NAFDAC’s efforts to sanitise markets and pledged the state government’s support to strengthen enforcement and ensure that only genuine products reached.
