JUST-IN: Police halts Jan 2 enforcement of tinted glass policy, cites court order

The Nigeria Police Force has suspended the enforcement of the Tinted Glass Permit policy nationwide following an interim order issued by a competent court.

The development comes barely weeks after the Police announced the resumption of enforcement of the policy, which was scheduled to commence on January 2, 2026, as part of measures aimed at strengthening public safety and internal security.

According to a statement issued on January 1, 2026, by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, the Police were served with an interim court order in Suit No. HOR/FHR/M/31/2025, dated December 17, 2025, restraining the Force from proceeding with the enforcement pending the hearing and determination of the substantive suit.

The statement explained that in compliance with constitutional provisions and respect for judicial authority, the Nigeria Police Force has entered an appearance in the matter, filed preliminary objections, and formally applied for the vacation of the interim order.

The court has adjourned the case to January 20, 2026, for further proceedings.

“In strict compliance with the subsisting court order, the Nigeria Police Force has placed the enforcement of the Tinted Glass Permit policy on hold nationwide, pending the decision of the court,” the statement said.

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, reaffirmed the commitment of the Force to the rule of law while carrying out its constitutional responsibility of protecting lives and property.

He noted that the Police would continue to deploy lawful and intelligence-driven strategies to address security challenges across the country while awaiting the court’s determination.

The Police also assured members of the public that further updates and clear guidance would be communicated as developments unfold, in the interest of public order and national security.
