BREAKING: Protesters gather as Nasir El-Rufai arrive EFCC headquarters in Abuja
Some of El-Rufai’s aides were blocked from entering the commission’s office in Jabi during the visit.
Protesters gathered at the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) headquarters in Abuja ahead of the arrival of former Kaduna State Governor, Malam Nasir El-Rufai.
While some demonstrators showed support for El-Rufai, others called on the anti-graft agency to thoroughly question him.
A mild altercation occurred when several people accompanying El-Rufai were prevented from entering the commission’s office in Jabi. The former governor honoured the EFCC invitation, following assurances from his counsel after an attempted arrest at Abuja airport on Thursday.
Ubong Esop Akpan, El-Rufai’s lawyer, explained that the EFCC invitation was received while the former governor was overseas, making an immediate appearance impossible. “Such an approach defies reason, as it presumes instantaneous compliance from an individual outside the jurisdiction, without regard for logistical realities or legal fairness,” he said.
According to Akpan, communications had been formally made to the EFCC since December 2025, confirming that El-Rufai would appear voluntarily at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, February 16, 2026. He described the attempted arrest as arbitrary and a violation of constitutional protections, calling it “an abuse of state power.”
The lawyer demanded the immediate cessation of all unlawful efforts to detain El-Rufai, the return of his confiscated passport, and a formal apology for the infringement on his rights and dignity.
