Acting IGP orders increased security at public spaces, worship centres amid Middle East tensions
The Nigeria Police Force has reassured citizens of its unwavering commitment to maintaining security and public order amid rising tensions in the Middle East.
In a statement on Sunday via X, Force Public Relations Officer ACP Benjamin Hundeyin said Acting Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Disu, had directed all Commissioners of Police across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory to intensify intelligence-led policing. Particular focus has been placed on the North West, North East, and North Central zones.
The IGP instructed security officials to collaborate closely with traditional and religious leaders, enhance patrols around worship centres and public spaces, and promptly address any attempt to exploit global conflicts to incite unrest.
“The Nigeria Police Force reiterates that Nigeria will not serve as a theatre for foreign conflicts,” the statement read. “Any attempt to import external ideological or religious tensions into the country will be met with the full weight of the law.”
IGP Disu also called on citizens to remain calm, vigilant, and law-abiding, and to report any suspicious activity to the nearest police formation.
The statement comes in the wake of joint US-Israeli airstrikes on Iran on February 28, 2026, reportedly resulting in the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and several senior officials.
Iran retaliated with large-scale missile and drone attacks across the Gulf, causing civilian casualties, airport closures, and disruption of key infrastructure in the UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, and other host nations of American military bases.
Following the escalation, the Nigerian government issued travel advisories urging citizens in Iran and Gulf countries to exercise caution, while the Ministry of Foreign Affairs called for de-escalation and restraint by all parties involved.
