ADC moves to heal rift as Atiku meets Hayatu-Deen in Lagos

The presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the 2027 general election, Atiku Abubakar, on Sunday held a closed-door meeting with fellow party member and former presidential aspirant, Mohammed Hayatu-Deen, in Lagos.

The meeting comes days after the ADC presidential primary election, which produced Atiku as the party’s flag bearer ahead of the 2027 presidential race.

Hayatu-Deen had contested the primary alongside Atiku and former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi.

The former presidential aspirant was notably absent during the official announcement of the primary results, sparking speculation over possible dissatisfaction with the process.

Prior to the declaration of the results, Hayatu-Deen had announced his withdrawal from the exercise, alleging widespread irregularities and vote manipulation during the primary election.

In a statement shared on social media, he expressed concern over reports of electoral malpractice from different parts of the country, claiming that he personally witnessed some of the incidents.

“I will not be attending the announcement of the ADC Presidential Election Results today,” Hayatu-Deen stated.

“I am concerned by reports from across the country of widespread vote rigging, some of which I myself observed, and will therefore be taking advice on my next steps.”

Although details of Sunday’s meeting were not disclosed, political observers believe it forms part of ongoing efforts by the ADC leadership to reconcile aggrieved members and strengthen party unity ahead of the 2027 general elections.
