Again, US govt shuts down after lawmakers fail to pass funding bill

Published

The United States government has entered a shutdown after lawmakers failed to reach an agreement on funding federal operations.

The shutdown followed a lapse in government funding after Congress could not pass a spending bill before the deadline. This failure has forced several federal agencies to begin shutting down activities considered non-essential.

As a result, hundreds of thousands of federal workers are affected. Many have been placed on temporary leave without pay, while others have been asked to continue working even though their salaries are suspended until funding is restored.

The shutdown is expected to continue until Congress and the White House agree on a new funding plan to reopen government operations fully.

Essential services, including national security, air traffic control, and emergency response, will continue to operate.

Public services, such as national parks and regulatory offices, as well as other non-essential agencies, are expected to face disruptions.

Congressional leaders said negotiations are ongoing to end the shutdown.

They added that there is no immediate timeline for the restoration of full government operations.

In November 2025, a prolonged standoff between Republicans and Democrats over government spending and healthcare subsidies shut the US government for over 40 days.

A US government shutdown occurs when congress fails to pass budget bills or halts resolutions to fund federal government operations and agencies for the new fiscal year.
