At a point, Nigerians were willing to pay N10,000 per litre but fuel wasn’t available – Akpabio
Senate President Godswill Akpabio has called on Nigerians to remain patient with the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, saying the government’s economic reforms are already producing visible results, particularly in the petroleum sector.
Speaking on recent developments, Akpabio said the country has moved away from the era of crippling fuel scarcity, when motorists spent hours in endless queues without being able to buy petrol.
“Since we came on board, we have not had three to five kilometres of vehicles lined up at fuel stations to buy petrol,” he said. “There was a time Nigerians were ready to pay as much as N10,000 per litre, yet the product was not available.”
He said the current reality, where petrol is largely available nationwide without long queues, demonstrates the effect of policies aimed at liberalising the downstream sector and attracting private sector investment.
According to the Senate President, the Tinubu administration’s partnership with private investors has helped expand local refining capacity, reduced dependence on fuel imports, and improved supply stability.
“For the first time, we are producing what we consume and consuming what we produce. We are even exporting to other countries,” he added.
Akpabio’s comments come amid continued public concern over high fuel prices, inflation, and the rising cost of living across the country.
While acknowledging the hardship being experienced by many Nigerians, he maintained that the ongoing reforms are necessary for long-term economic growth and national stability.
He urged citizens to take a broader and longer-term view of the administration’s policies, expressing confidence that the full benefits would become more evident with time.
