Atiku hosts Kwankwaso in Abuja ahead of planned ADC defection

Former Vice President and presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, on Saturday hosted former Kano State governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, at his Abuja residence in what observers see as a significant political meeting ahead of the 2027 elections.

Kwankwaso, who was the presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) in the last election, visited Atiku amid growing indications that he is set to defect to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Confirming the visit via his X handle, Atiku described it as a courtesy call, noting that both leaders engaged in extensive discussions on national issues.

“This evening, I received the former Governor of Kano State and the Presidential candidate of the NNPP, H.E Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, on a courtesy visit. We had a robust discussion on the state of the nation,” he wrote.

The meeting comes days after the National Secretary of the ADC and former Osun State governor, Rauf Aregbesola, also visited Kwankwaso in Abuja, further fuelling speculation about his imminent move to the party.

The Kwankwasiyya Movement has since confirmed that Kwankwaso will formally register with the ADC on Monday, March 30, 2026, at his residence in Kano, marking his official exit from the NNPP.

Political observers say the development signals a major realignment within opposition ranks, particularly in the North, as leaders intensify efforts to build a formidable coalition ahead of the next general elections.

The speculation surrounding Kwankwaso’s defection gained further traction during the recent Kwankwasiyya Eid gathering in Kano, where supporters openly chanted the name of former Anambra State governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, in his presence.

With consultations ongoing among key opposition figures, Kwankwaso’s anticipated move is expected to reshape alliances and influence the emerging political dynamics ahead of 2027.
