The African Union Commission (AUC) has applauded the conduct of Uganda’s presidential election held on January 15 and congratulated President Yoweri Museveni on his re-election.

Museveni, Uganda’s long-serving leader, recorded a decisive victory in the poll, securing 71.65 per cent of the total votes cast, according to official results released by the country’s electoral commission. The outcome extends his stay in office, which began in 1986, into a seventh term.

His closest challenger, opposition figure Bobi Wine, finished second with 24.72 per cent of the votes.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, commended the overall conduct of the election and formally congratulated Museveni on his victory.

“The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, commends the conduct of the elections in Uganda and congratulates H.E. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni on his re-election with 71.61 per cent of the votes cast during the presidential elections held on 15 January 2026,” the statement read.

Youssouf reaffirmed the African Union’s commitment to supporting democratic governance across the continent, while praising the people of Uganda for their participation in the electoral process.

He also expressed appreciation to former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan for his leadership of the joint African Union, Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), and Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD) Election Observation Mission to Uganda.

According to the AUC chair, Jonathan provided “sterling leadership” throughout the observation exercise.

The commission further pledged to continue working with African states to promote democracy, peace, security, and sustainable development across the continent.
