Uganda’s youngest King, Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru IV, dies at 34

King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, the traditional ruler of Uganda’s Tooro Kingdom who became the world’s youngest reigning monarch at the age of three, has died at 34.

His death was announced on Friday by the Prime Minister of the Tooro Kingdom, Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki.

King Oyo ascended the throne at the age of three following the death of his father, King Patrick Olimi Kaboyo, in 1995, making him the youngest reigning monarch in the world at the time.

The Tooro Kingdom did not immediately disclose the cause of his death.

However, local media quoted a Ugandan government minister as saying the king had been critically ill and had travelled to the United States for medical treatment.

King Oyo became the ruler of Tooro, located in western Uganda, in 1995 following the death of his father.

Although Uganda operates under an elected government headed by a president, the country retains several traditional kingdoms whose monarchs have no constitutional political authority but continue to wield considerable cultural influence.

Oyo was recognised by Guinness World Records as the world’s youngest reigning monarch when he ascended the throne.

He ruled over a kingdom with a population of more than two million people and was the 13th monarch of Tooro, a kingdom established in the early 19th century.

Announcing his death, Akiiki described the monarch’s passing as an “immeasurable loss” to the royal family and the people of Tooro.

“I call upon all the people of Tooro to remain united, calm and prayerful during this profoundly difficult time,” Akiiki said on Friday. “May His Majesty the King rest in eternal peace.”

The Tooro Kingdom operates a hereditary system of succession, with the throne traditionally passed through the royal family.

King Oyo was not officially married, but Akiiki said the kingdom had already made provisions for the continuation of the royal line.

“the continuity of the Crown is assured”.

“His Majesty leaves behind a Prince as his heir, whose identity will be formally revealed at the appropriate time, in accordance with the traditions and customs of Tooro Kingdom,” he explained.

Oyo’s succession to the throne began when he was only three years old, following his father’s death in 1995.

Because of his age, a regency was established to govern on his behalf, with his mother, the queen mother, among those involved.

He formally assumed full royal duties after turning 18 and was officially crowned in a ceremony attended by dignitaries from Uganda and beyond.

During his reign, Oyo became a prominent figure in Uganda’s cultural landscape and was regarded with respect by many people in Tooro.

According to Uganda’s Daily Monitor, the monarch supported initiatives focused on youth empowerment, education and environmental conservation.

He also used his platform to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS and other social issues affecting communities in Uganda.

His death has prompted tributes from other traditional institutions across the country.

The Buganda Kingdom, Uganda’s largest and most influential traditional institution, expressed solidarity with the people of Tooro following the monarch’s death and described Oyo as a valuable figure to Uganda.

Oyo’s death now leaves Tooro Kingdom preparing for the next stage of its hereditary succession, with details of his heir expected to be formally announced according to the kingdom’s traditions.
