BREAKING: EFCC arrest, detain ex-Minister Chris Ngige, aide confirms
Former Governor of Anambra State and former Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige, has been confirmed to be in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The clarification came on Tuesday from his former media aide, Fred Chukwuelobe, after a flurry of online rumours suggested that the ex-minister had been kidnapped by unknown gunmen.
Chukwuelobe dismissed the claims as false, explaining that Ngige was neither abducted nor missing but was currently with EFCC operatives.
“Former Governor of Anambra State and immediate past Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige, is with the EFCC. More details later,” he said in a short statement.
The rumour mill had gone into overdrive earlier in the day, with several unverified social media posts alleging that Ngige had been whisked away by armed men.
His recent security scare in Anambra State further fueled public fears.
Ngige had been in the news following an attack on his convoy in the state, a violent incident that occurred while he was not in the vehicle, but one that nevertheless raised concerns about his safety and political exposure.
As at press time, neither the EFCC nor associates close to the former minister have disclosed the grounds for his arrest or the specific issues under investigation.
His detention, however, has triggered fresh speculation, especially given his prominent roles in the Buhari administration and his lingering influence in southeastern politics.
