Stowaway Drama in Ilorin: NCAA arrests man who tried to hide inside aircraft undercarriage
The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has confirmed the arrest of a suspected stowaway who attempted to hide in the undercarriage of an Overland Airways aircraft at the Gen. Tunde Idiagbon International Airport, Ilorin.
The suspect, identified as Segun Martins, was apprehended around 3:02 p.m. on Wednesday after he allegedly breached airport security and made his way to the airside, heading straight for the aircraft preparing for taxi.
In a statement issued by Michael Achimugu, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at the NCAA, the agency explained that Martins attempted to conceal himself between the aircraft’s tyres in a desperate bid to exit the country.
According to Achimugu, vigilant ground personnel spotted the intruder and swiftly intercepted him before he could endanger himself or compromise flight safety.
He was subsequently handed over to the Airport Police Division for interrogation.
Preliminary investigation revealed that Martins believed the aircraft was bound for the United States and hoped to leave Nigeria by clinging to the aircraft’s landing gear, a dangerous act that has historically resulted in fatalities.
Aviation authorities have since assured travellers of heightened security measures across all strategic areas of airports nationwide to prevent similar incidents.
