Gunmen ambush convoy of ex-Anambra Governor Chris Ngige, kill two
Gunmen on Wednesday launched a deadly attack on the convoy of former Anambra State governor, Dr. Chris Ngige, along the Nkpor–Nnobi Road in Idemili North Local Government Area, leaving two people dead and several others injured.
Eyewitnesses said the armed men, dressed in police and military-style uniforms, opened fire on the pilot vehicle.
A police officer was shot dead, and the attackers reportedly made away with his rifle and uniform.
A woman who was said to be recording the incident on her mobile phone was also shot and killed instantly.
A shop owner who stepped out to see what was happening was struck by bullets and sustained serious injuries.
He lost a significant amount of blood and is scheduled for surgery to remove bullet fragments. He is reported to be in stable condition.
The escort team leader also suffered gunshot wounds and has undergone surgery, with doctors optimistic about his recovery.
The pilot vehicle was riddled with bullets during the attack.
Dr. Ngige was not in the convoy when the gunmen struck.
In a statement, his former press secretary, Mr. Fred Chukwuelobe, confirmed the incident, saying he had spoken with the former governor.
“His Excellency, Dr. Ngige, confirmed the attack and assured that all necessary measures are being taken to ensure proper medical attention for the injured.
He also extends his condolences to the family of the woman who was killed while recording the attack,” Chukwuelobe said.
As of the time of filing this report, the Anambra State Police Command had not issued an official statement on the incident.
