BREAKING: Kano Assembly begins impeachment proceedings against Deputy Governor
The Kano State House of Assembly has commenced impeachment proceedings against Deputy Governor Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo over allegations of gross misconduct, abuse of office, and breach of public trust.
The notice of impeachment was presented on the floor of the Assembly by Majority Leader Lawan Hussaini Dala, who said the action complies with Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
Dala stated that the allegations relate to Abdussalam’s tenure as Commissioner for Local Government between 2023 and 2024 and his current role as deputy governor.
He claimed the deputy governor participated in the diversion of local government funds, receiving N1.5 million monthly from each of the 44 local councils between June 2023 and January 2024, totaling N462 million.
He further alleged that Abdussalam received additional payments of N3.255 million per council between February and July 2024 under the guise of special assignments, amounting to about N726 million.
The impeachment notice also accused Abdussalam of abusing his office to facilitate payments of N10 million from each council to NovoMed Pharmaceuticals Limited, allegedly contravening state procurement and fiscal management laws and totaling N440 million.
Dala said these actions constitute gross misconduct under Section 188(2) of the Constitution, representing grave violations of constitutional provisions and ethical standards.
The notice was reportedly endorsed by 38 lawmakers, meeting the constitutional threshold to initiate impeachment. Dala urged the Speaker to transmit the notice to the deputy governor, after which the House may request the state Chief Judge to constitute a panel to investigate the allegations.
Members of the Assembly expressed support for the notice, while the deputy governor has yet to respond publicly.
