BREAKING: Senate passes Electoral Act (Repeal & Enactment) Bill, 2026
The bill was passed after consideration and approval of 155 clauses.
The Nigerian Senate on Tuesday passed the Electoral Act, 2022 (Repeal & Enactment) Bill, 2026, following detailed consideration of all 155 clauses of the proposed legislation.
While most clauses were retained as originally drafted, the upper chamber approved several amendments, including a notable reduction in the timeline for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to publish notices of election. The period was shortened from 360 days to 180 days.
The amendment followed a motion moved by Senator Tahir Monguno, who argued that the 360-day timeframe would be too long for INEC to meet the statutory requirements for the upcoming general elections. Monguno stressed that cutting the period in half would enable timely compliance and allow for adequate election preparations.
“The adjustment to 180 days is necessary to give INEC sufficient time to carry out its mandate and ensure a smooth electoral process,” Monguno said during the debate.
The passage of the bill marks a significant milestone in Nigeria’s electoral reform agenda, with lawmakers emphasizing the importance of timely election notices to enhance transparency, accountability, and voter participation.
