Calabar safe, ready to host National Sports Council, Otu’s Govt says
The Cross River State Government has assured delegates, athletes, officials and the general public that Calabar remains one of Nigeria’s safest and most welcoming cities, fully prepared to host the National Council on Sports this week.
In a statement released on Sunday, 23 November 2025, by Linus Obogo, Chief Press Secretary and Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the governor, the government dismissed recent claims of rising insecurity in the state.
It described such reports as unfounded and not in line with the peaceful atmosphere currently experienced across Cross River.
The statement noted that just a few days earlier, the state successfully hosted the National Council on Health, an event attended by the Honourable Minister of Health and other major stakeholders from different parts of the country.
According to the government, the gathering was conducted smoothly and peacefully, showcasing Cross River’s usual warmth, strong organisation and efficiency.
It added that under the steady leadership of Governor Bassey Edet Otu, the state’s security system has been further strengthened, guaranteeing continued safety for residents and visitors.
“Cross River remains calm, secure and ever-hospitable, and is fully ready to host national and international events of any scale with excellence and confidence,” the statement said.
