Concerns trail medical care as details emerge on Adichie’s son’s death
Fresh details have surfaced surrounding the tragic death of Nkanu Nnamdi, the 21-month-old son of celebrated writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and her husband, Dr Ivara Esege, who passed away after a brief illness while the family was in Lagos during the Christmas holidays.
Sources familiar with the situation disclosed that the toddler reportedly developed an infection and fell ill in the days leading up to his death. It was gathered that his parents had already concluded arrangements for a full medical evacuation abroad, with a specialist medical team scheduled to transfer him to the United States on January 7, 2026, for further treatment.
According to the sources, Nkanu was taken to a private medical facility in Victoria Island, Lagos, on January 6, mainly to undergo medical tests requested by the overseas medical team ahead of the evacuation. He was said to have arrived at the hospital in a stable condition.
However, before the planned evacuation could be carried out, the child’s condition reportedly worsened. Persons close to the family have expressed concerns over the quality of medical attention provided in the critical hours before his death, raising questions about whether standard clinical procedures were adequately followed.
While no official allegation has been made, sources said there are lingering concerns that the care provided may not have met expected standards, with some believing the outcome might have been different under different circumstances.
The family has so far refrained from making further public statements, beyond earlier appeals for privacy as they mourn their loss. Efforts to obtain a response from the medical facility involved were still ongoing as of the time of filing this report.
