Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters have claimed responsibility for the killing of Brigadier General M. Uba after ambushing a military convoy on Damboa Road along Wajiroko in Borno State.

The insurgents attacked the troops on Friday as they were transporting military equipment.

The fighters reportedly opened fire on the convoy, sparking a fierce gun battle between the troops and the terrorists.

During the confrontation, ISWAP seized at least 17 military motorcycles, while two Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) operatives and two soldiers were confirmed dead.

Following the attack, reports circulated that General Uba had been abducted.

However, Army spokesperson Onyechi Anele dismissed the claims on Saturday, insisting that the brigadier general fought off the ambush with “superior firepower,” forcing the insurgents to retreat and abandon their mission.

According to the army, Uba led the surviving troops back to their base and also released a video statement confirming he was alive, unhurt, and fully in control.

But in a new twist, Reuters reported that ISWAP claims to have executed the brigadier general after capturing him.

The international news agency cited a statement posted on the group’s Amaq propaganda channel, where the terrorists said they were responsible for the ambush and the killing.

The Nigerian Army has yet to respond to the latest claim by the insurgent group.
