ISWAP attack military convoy in Borno, kill soldiers, kidnap Brigade Commander
Fighters of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) on Friday night ambushed a Nigerian military convoy in Borno State, reportedly abducting a serving general while killing several soldiers and members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), according to a report by Very Nigerian.
The kidnapped officer is said to be a brigade commander who was leading the troops during the operation.
If confirmed, the outlet notes that this would mark the first documented case of an extremist group in Nigeria capturing a serving general directly from the frontline.
While insurgents have killed senior military officers in past attacks, the abduction of an officer of this rank is extremely rare.
As of press time, the Nigerian military has not released an official statement, and the full details of casualties remain uncertain.
The spokesperson of the Nigerian Army, Lieutenant Colonel Onyechi Anele, has yet to respond to enquiries.
Very Nigerian is currently monitoring the development and will provide updates as more information becomes available.
