England comes from behind to knock DR Congo out of the World Cup in 2–1 thriller
England avoided one of the biggest upsets in their World Cup history after Harry Kane scored twice late on to inspire a dramatic 2-1 comeback victory over DR Congo in Atlanta and secure a place in the Round of 16.
Thomas Tuchel’s side looked set for a shock elimination after Brian Cipenga gave DR Congo an early lead, with the African side defending resolutely for much of the contest.
England struggled to break down their opponents and were fortunate not to fall further behind before half-time after Yoane Wissa struck the post with the goal at his mercy.
DR Congo goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi also produced a string of outstanding saves to frustrate England throughout the match.
However, with just 15 minutes remaining, England captain Harry Kane stepped up when his team needed him most.
The striker headed home the equaliser in the 75th minute from a cross delivered by substitute Anthony Gordon to breathe life back into England’s campaign.
Kane then completed the turnaround in the 86th minute with a moment of individual brilliance.
Collecting the ball on the edge of the penalty area, he turned sharply, drove forward and unleashed a powerful right-footed strike into the top corner beyond the helpless Mpasi.
The victory sends England into the Round of 16, where they will face co-hosts Mexico in Mexico City.
Kane’s brace also took his tally to five goals at the tournament, reinforcing his status as one of the standout performers at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
