EPL: Fernandes, Sesko fire Manchester United to 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace, Reds go third
Manchester United staged a strong comeback to defeat Crystal Palace 2–1 at Old Trafford, moving into third place in the Premier League after a dramatic contest marked by a controversial penalty and red card decision.
Palace looked set for a memorable victory after defender Maxence Lacroix gave the visitors an early lead in the fourth minute, putting United under pressure from the outset.
The turning point came in the second half when Lacroix fouled Matheus Cunha as the Brazilian attacker advanced toward goal. Although the initial contact appeared to occur outside the penalty area, the defender continued holding Cunha as he moved into the box. Referee Chris Kavanagh reviewed the incident and upheld his decision to award a penalty while also sending Lacroix off for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity.
Bruno Fernandes converted the resulting spot-kick in the 57th minute to restore parity, before Benjamin Sesko completed the comeback eight minutes later with a powerful header from Fernandes’ cross.
Sesko’s goal marked his third consecutive game on the scoresheet and his seventh in eight matches, underlining his growing importance to United’s attack.
Former United goalkeeper Dean Henderson produced several fine saves to keep Palace in the contest, including a sharp stop to deny Casemiro and another effort from substitute Amad Diallo.
The victory extends the impressive run of manager Michael Carrick, whose side have now recorded six wins and a draw in seven matches. The result lifts United above Aston Villa into third place on goal difference — their highest league position since the first season of Erik ten Hag’s tenure in 2023.
Crystal Palace remain 14th on the table, sitting 10 points clear of the relegation zone as they continue their campaign.
