Ex-Benue Governor Suswam resigns from PDP

Suswam said stepping aside was both honourable and necessary.

Former Benue State Governor, Gabriel Suswam, has formally resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing the party’s prolonged internal crisis as the reason for his decision.

Suswam’s resignation was conveyed in a letter dated February 4, addressed to the Chairman of the PDP in Mbagber Council Ward, Logo Local Government Area of Benue State.

In the letter, the former governor expressed concern over what he described as the unending leadership and structural challenges within the opposition party, which he said have made it difficult for the PDP to function effectively.

Although Suswam did not disclose his next political destination, he has been linked to a coalition of opposition leaders who have reportedly adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as their platform ahead of the next general election.

He said his decision to step aside was taken in good faith, adding that the party must first resolve its internal contradictions before it can regain relevance.

“I consider it honourable and necessary to step aside while wishing the party well should it one day find the courage and consensus to resolve its long-standing issues,” Suswam wrote.

Suswam’s exit adds to the growing list of high-profile defections that have continued to weaken the PDP amid persistent leadership disputes and factional battles within the party.
