EXCLUSIVE: Kwankwaso set to join ADC, broker deal for Senate Presidency

There are speculations that Kwankwaso may contest for a Senate seat and potentially emerge Senate President if plans materialise.

Former Kano State governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, is on the verge of defecting to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections gather momentum.

Sources familiar with the development disclosed that Kwankwaso has already initiated moves towards joining the party, mandating his close ally, Buba Galadima, to open negotiations with ADC leadership.

The decision is believed to have been influenced by recent internal crises within the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), particularly the Court of Appeal ruling which affirmed the faction led by Agbo Major over that of Ajuji Ahmed, a camp aligned with Kwankwaso.

Meanwhile, the ADC has continued to gain traction in Kano State, driven largely by the rising influence of Ibrahim Ali Amin, a former APP chairman.

Political stakeholders have reportedly been making frequent visits to his residence, underscoring his growing prominence within the party’s structure.

Insiders, however, noted that discussions on party structure and power-sharing arrangements remain unresolved.

Among the options under consideration is a possible Senate bid for Kwankwaso, with speculations that he could emerge Senate President if the plan materialises.

The ADC is said to be preparing for open and transparent congresses, as well as inclusive primaries, an approach that may contrast with Kwankwaso’s preference for consensus-based candidate selection.

It also remains unclear whether the former governor will back a candidate from his political base for the Kano governorship or align with other aspirants, including Ibrahim Ali Amin and Ibrahim Khalil.

With shifting alliances and growing political recalculations, Kwankwaso’s anticipated move could significantly reshape the political landscape in Kano and beyond ahead of the 2027 polls.
