FCT security operatives intensify patrols to protect worship centers, border communities
Security agencies in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have stepped up protective measures across the territory, deploying special patrols to safeguard churches and other places of worship, particularly in border and forested communities prone to criminal attacks.
The joint operation, launched on November 9, 2025, involved operatives from the FCT Police Anti-Kidnapping Unit, the Department of State Services (DSS), local hunters, and vigilante groups.
The coordinated patrols covered critical routes linking Bwari to Kaduna State, Bwari to Niger State, and Gwagwalada to Niger State, identified as potential security flashpoints.
According to the FCT Police Command, the operation, which lasted from 6:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., was ordered by the Commissioner of Police, CP Miller Dantawaye, as part of an ongoing strategy to reinforce security during the ember months, a period often associated with a rise in criminal activities.
Command spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, explained that the initiative seeks to boost public confidence, prevent crimes, and ensure worshippers can gather safely.
“Church leaders in the affected communities have been engaged and reassured of the CP’s commitment to their safety,” Adeh stated.
“They have also been advised on proactive safety measures such as avoiding late-night events, keeping close contact with security agencies, and reporting suspicious movements.”
Beyond visible patrols, the security exercise also included intelligence-driven strategies aimed at preventing attacks. Several access routes frequently used by criminal groups have been blocked, while security posts within forested areas remain manned round-the-clock.
The joint effort leverages the unique strengths of each group, with the Anti-Kidnapping Unit providing tactical support, the DSS handling intelligence operations, and local hunters and vigilante groups offering vital knowledge of the terrain and local dynamics.
The command urged residents to remain alert and cooperate with law enforcement agencies to enhance collective safety.
“Security is everyone’s responsibility,” it stated, encouraging citizens to promptly report suspicious activities through emergency numbers: 08032003913, 08068587311, Crime Response Unit (CRU) 08107314192, or the Public Relations Office at 07038979348.
CP Dantawaye reassured residents that the FCT remains safe and that the command would continue adjusting its security strategies to sustain peace and order across communities.
The operation comes amid rising concerns over attacks on religious institutions nationwide, with law enforcement prioritizing the protection of worship centres as part of wider national security efforts.
The November 9 patrol marks another strong step by security agencies to ensure residents can worship freely and safely during the festive season.
