Ghanaian Landlord arrested for de-roofing tenant’s apartment in Rivers
The landlord reportedly removed the roof after the tenant failed to vacate the apartment following a two-week grace period.
The Rivers State Police Command has arrested a Ghanaian landlord, Mr Samuel Frimpong, for allegedly removing the roof of his tenant’s apartment in Mgbuoba, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area.
According to reports, the incident occurred after the tenant, Mr Anozie Tochukwu, failed to vacate the apartment following the expiration of a two-week grace period. Tochukwu, who moved into the property in January 2024 and consistently paid his rent, said he had requested an extension to relocate to a new apartment.
“On February 1, 2026, I showed my landlord proof of payment for my new apartment and asked for 14 days to move out,” Tochukwu said. “But on February 3, around 8:02 AM, my wife called to say that Mr Frimpong had de-roofed our home. Hours later, heavy rain damaged all our property, including documents, household items, and baby medications. My pregnant wife and two young children were exposed.”
The tenant listed losses estimated at ₦25 million, including a 43-inch television, deep freezer, chandelier, furniture, NYSC certificate, degree certificates, professional certifications, clothes, food items, beddings, and nine months of savings.
Detectives from the Ozuoba Police Division arrested the landlord after the matter was reported. Police spokesperson, Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the arrest and said investigations are ongoing. “The landlord has been arrested and is currently in our custody. He may be arraigned after the investigation,” she stated.
Human rights lawyer Raymond Okocha, of Lawyers Watch for Justice International Initiative, condemned the action as a “grave injustice” and a “breakdown of the rule of law.” He explained that the landlord violated Nigerian law by taking “self-help” measures without a statutory Notice to Quit, Seven-Day Notice of Intention to Recover Premises, or court order.
“Eviction cannot be carried out by destroying property. The landlord’s actions constitute malicious damage and psychological abuse,” Okocha said. “Justice for Mr Tochukwu is justice for all tenants. The law must take its course.”
