“I feel good, healthy, sound and ready to Go” — Tinubu after return from Europe

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has returned to Nigeria after spending about four weeks in Europe, declaring that he is hale, strong and ready to resume work.

Tinubu made the statement on Tuesday evening after arriving in Lagos from Paris, France, where he spent the latter part of his working vacation.

Responding to journalists who asked about concerns surrounding his health following his prolonged stay abroad, the President said he remained fit and ready to continue his official duties.

“Rumours will always emanate from politics. I am hale and strong. I am ready to work. The fact remains that I am here, healthy, sound and ready to go,” Tinubu said.

The President departed Nigeria on August 30 for London before travelling to Paris, with the Presidency describing the trip as a working vacation. His stay was later extended by a few days before he returned to Nigeria on Tuesday.

Tinubu’s prolonged absence generated public and political debate, particularly after the extension of his stay and his decision not to personally attend the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York.

The Presidency, however, maintained that the President remained in contact with officials in Nigeria and continued to direct the affairs of government while abroad. It also said his physical absence from Abuja did not prevent him from performing his responsibilities.

Vice President Kashim Shettima represented Tinubu at several official engagements during the President’s absence, including the 81st UN General Assembly in New York, where he represented Nigeria and delivered the country’s national statement.

During his stay in France, Tinubu met with French President Emmanuel Macron and businessman Vincent Bolloré. The Presidency also linked his stay to engagements with investors and discussions around major investment projects, including the proposed Gateway Deep Sea Port in Ogun State.

The President also met with businessman Femi Otedola at a private dinner in Paris on Monday, according to reports.

Tinubu arrived in Lagos on Tuesday evening, where he is expected to remain for activities marking Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary on October 1.

The Presidency said he would attend the premiere of a movie honouring the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola at the Wole Soyinka National Theatre in Iganmu, Lagos, as part of the Independence Day activities.

Tinubu is also expected to hold strategic meetings with political leaders and associates in Lagos before returning to Abuja after completing his engagements.
