‘I’m Bigger Than Your Father’ — Wizkid tells Seun Kuti as feud escalates
The feud began after Seun warned fans against calling Wizkid the “New Fela.”
Grammy-winning Nigerian singer Wizkid has stirred fresh controversy after declaring that he is “bigger than” legendary Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo Kuti, amid an ongoing public feud with Fela’s son, Seun Kuti.
Wizkid made the statement on Tuesday via his Instagram Story, breaking days of silence following criticism from Seun Kuti over comparisons between him and the late Afrobeat icon.
In a series of strongly worded posts, the “Ojuelegba” crooner directly addressed Seun Kuti, stating that he had surpassed Fela in stature. The comments quickly sparked backlash online before the posts were later deleted.
Prior to his direct remarks, Wizkid had shared a viral video of a woman criticising Seun Kuti in Yoruba, accusing him of bitterness and suggesting that Wizkid’s global success has helped sustain interest in Fela’s legacy among younger audiences.
Seun Kuti responded shortly after, dismissing Wizkid’s comments and urging the singer to remain confident in his own achievements. He later mocked Wizkid for deleting the posts, suggesting that the singer lacked the courage to stand by his statements.
The feud began on January 10, when Seun Kuti went live on Instagram to caution Wizkid’s fans against describing the singer as the “New Fela,” describing such comparisons as disrespectful to his father’s legacy.
“Keep Fela’s name out of your mouths,” Kuti said at the time. “The shoes are too big to fill.”
The disagreement later expanded into a dispute over the nickname “Big Bird,” after a fan asked Kuti to stop using the name, arguing that Wizkid is popularly known as the “Biggest Bird.” Kuti accused Wizkid of adopting the moniker and insisted that he was not seeking attention from the pop star.
During the exchange, Seun Kuti also claimed that he recently earned $120,000 simply for being Fela’s son, citing his international performances and insisting that he did not need “clout” from any contemporary artiste.
Despite the current spat, Wizkid has previously acknowledged Fela as his greatest musical influence and has a tattoo of the Afrobeat legend, a fact many fans have referenced in urging restraint from both sides.
