Interior Minister Tunji-Ojo reaffirms strategic partnership With NUJ

The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening collaboration with the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) to promote transparency, effective communication and public engagement on matters relating to internal security and citizenship administration.

Tunji-Ojo made the pledge during a courtesy visit by the leadership of the NUJ to the Ministry of Interior in Abuja, where he described the ministry as “the Ministry of the people,” noting that its responsibilities directly affect every Nigerian.

He explained that the ministry’s mandate—covering citizenship integrity, internal security, border management and the protection of national assets—requires strong collaboration with the media to ensure accurate information dissemination.

The minister emphasised the vital role of the media in democratic governance, stressing that government institutions cannot function effectively without public communication.

“Where facts are not made available, assumptions take their place,” he said, underscoring the need for proactive information sharing to build public confidence in government institutions.

Tunji-Ojo described the relationship between the ministry and the media as a strategic partnership built on accountability, transparency and national interest, and welcomed proposals for structured engagement such as periodic interface sessions and regular press briefings.

According to him, consistent communication would enable Nigerians to better understand ongoing reforms and innovations within the ministry.

While commending journalists for balanced reporting on the ministry’s activities, the minister noted that constructive criticism remains essential for institutional growth and improved governance.

He added that responsible journalism helps refine policies, strengthens governance processes and promotes informed public discourse.

Earlier, NUJ National President, Alhassan Yahaya, said the visit was aimed at strengthening institutional ties and exploring areas of cooperation between the union and the ministry.

He commended ongoing reforms in the internal security sector and pledged the union’s support in promoting national security awareness.

The NUJ leadership proposed quarterly ministerial press briefings to keep Nigerians informed about the ministry’s programmes and reforms and also invited the minister to address its forthcoming National Executive Council meeting.

The union further sought collaboration in capacity development through its training institute, particularly in the area of security reporting and responsible information dissemination.

Both parties agreed that sustained dialogue and structured engagement would help strengthen public trust, promote national cohesion and ensure citizens remain adequately informed on issues affecting internal security and governance.
