Israel announces Somaliland as Independent State
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has announced that Israel has officially recognised the Republic of Somaliland as an independent and sovereign state.
Netanyahu made the announcement on Friday in a statement shared on his verified X account.
He said the recognition followed the signing of a joint and mutual declaration alongside Israel’s Foreign Minister, Gideon Sa’ar, and the President of the Republic of Somaliland, Abdirahman Mohamed Abdallah.
According to the Israeli prime minister, the declaration was made in the spirit of the Abraham Accords, which were initiated under former United States President Donald Trump. He noted that the agreement reflects Israel’s continued push to expand diplomatic ties and cooperation in line with the principles behind the accords.
Somaliland, located in the Horn of Africa, has long sought international recognition after declaring independence from Somalia in 1991, though it has largely remained unrecognised by the global community.
According to him, the State of Israel plans to immediately expand its relations with the Republic of Somaliland through extensive cooperation in the fields of agriculture, health, technology.and economy.
He said President Abdallah appreciated the historic declaration and expressed appreciation for his achievements in fighting terrorism and advancing regional peace.
“I announced today the official recognition of the Republic of Somaliland as an independent and sovereign state,” Netanyahu said.
