JUST-IN: Federal High Court grants El-Rufai ₦100m bail, imposes strict conditions

A Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday granted bail to former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, in the sum of ₦100 million with one surety in like sum.

El-Rufai is standing trial on charges bordering on the alleged unlawful interception of communications following comments he reportedly made during a national television interview.

Delivering the ruling, Justice Joyce Abdulmalik imposed stringent conditions for the bail, requiring the defendant to meet strict verification and documentation requirements before release.

The court ordered that the surety must reside in either Maitama or Asokoro districts of Abuja and must provide the original Certificate of Occupancy of a landed property to be deposited at the court registry.

It further directed that the surety must be a federal civil servant not below Grade Level 17, with proof of salary payments for at least three months, duly authenticated by a bank manager within the court’s jurisdiction.

In addition, the surety is required to submit an affidavit of means, enter into a bail bond, and provide a recent passport photograph.

The court also ordered El-Rufai to deposit all valid international passports with its registry pending the determination of the case.

Justice Abdulmalik further directed the defendant to report to the headquarters of the Department of State Services (DSS) every last Friday of the month by 10 a.m. to sign an attendance register.

The judge warned that failure to comply with any of the bail conditions would lead to automatic revocation.

As part of additional conditions, the court ordered the submission of a verification letter from the surety’s department as well as a tax clearance certificate covering the last six months.

El-Rufai is also required to present a letter of attestation from the Chairman of the Kaduna Traditional Council.
