Kano lawmaker representing Gov Yusuf defects to NDC after losing return ticket
A member of the Kano State House of Assembly representing Gwale Constituency, Hon. Abdulmajid Isa Umar Mai Rigar Fata, has defected from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
The lawmaker, who represents Gwale Local Government Area, was formally received on Thursday by former Kano State governor and NDC leader, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, at his Maitama residence in Abuja.
Kwankwaso, a major political figure in Kano politics, welcomed the defectors, describing their move as a boost to the party’s grassroots structure in the state.
Mai Rigar Fata was first elected into the Kano State House of Assembly in 2023 under the then Kwankwaso-led NNPP, before later aligning with Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to the APC.
His latest defection reportedly followed his inability to secure the APC ticket to return to the State Assembly.
Also received into the NDC were Hon. Kabiru Sani Auwal Obi, a former Vice Chairman of Gwale Local Government, and Malam Mahadi Isa Umar.

The development comes shortly after a Federal High Court ruling on Thursday, which political observers say has reopened defection opportunities previously restricted by INEC guidelines.
Reacting to the ruling, the spokesman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Bolaji Abdullahi, said a mass exodus from the APC could be imminent in the coming weeks.
