2027: APC adopts direct Presidential primaries as consensus fails
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has announced that its presidential candidate for the 2027 general election will emerge through a direct primary scheduled to hold across all 8,809 wards in the country on Saturday, May 23.
APC National Secretary, Senator Ajibola Basiru, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday night, outlining the structure and guidelines for the party’s internal election process.
According to the party, all registered members will be eligible to participate in the exercise, which will see incumbent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu contesting alongside aspirant Stanley Osifo for the party’s ticket.
“All registered members of the party shall be eligible to vote for the presidential aspirant of their choice in each of the 8,809 wards across the country,” Basiru said.
He explained that the process would be tightly coordinated through local government and state structures, with results collated and transmitted to the national level for final validation.
“The direct primary will be held in each of the 8,809 wards. Results for each ward, comprising the 774 Local Governments, will be collated by the Local Government Collation Officer… before presentation to the Presidential Primary Election Committee in Abuja,” the statement added.
The party said the process would follow guidelines previously submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), assuring members of transparency and internal democracy.
To oversee the exercise, the APC National Working Committee has constituted a Presidential Primary Election Committee chaired by former Senate President Anyim Pius Anyim, with other senior political figures also included.
Former Senate President Ken Nnamani, Senator Victor Ndoma-Egba, SAN, Rt. Hon. Yakubu Dogara, and former Governor Idris Wada are among members of the committee, while Sanusi Musa will serve as secretary.
The Appeal Committee will be chaired by former Katsina State Governor Aminu Masari, with former Speaker Patricia Etteh and Samuel Piwuna as members.
State-level coordination will largely be handled by governors and designated party leaders, with Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu overseeing Abia State, Senator Philip Aduda handling the FCT, Senator Teslim Folarin for Oyo, and other notable party figures assigned across various states.
The development sets the stage for a highly structured and nationwide internal contest as the APC moves toward selecting its flag bearer for the 2027 presidential election.
