Kwankwaso orders supporters to dump ADC ahead of planned NDC defection

Former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has reportedly directed his supporters to resign from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), ahead of his expected defection to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) next week.

The development follows the resignation of a key Kwankwasiyya Movement figure in Dala Local Government Area, Kabiru Adamu Abdullahi, who confirmed his exit from the ADC in a letter dated May 1, 2026, addressed to his ward chairman.

Abdullahi said he was leaving the party with immediate effect, expressing appreciation for his time in the ADC while signalling alignment with the movement’s broader political direction.

In a separate social media post, he linked his decision to a directive from the Kwankwasiyya leadership, suggesting a coordinated withdrawal of loyalists from the party.

A senior Kwankwasiyya figure, Shehu Wada Sagagi, said the decision followed extensive consultations, adding that concerns over legal uncertainties within the ADC influenced the move.

According to him, the leadership considered the NDC a more stable political platform ahead of the 2027 elections.

Kwankwaso is reportedly expected to formally join the NDC alongside other political allies, with speculation also linking him to a possible political alignment with former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi.

Political observers say the anticipated move could further reshape opposition dynamics, as key figures continue to reposition ahead of the next general elections.

However, neither Kwankwaso nor Obi has publicly confirmed the final details of the reported defection at the time of this report.
