Man dies by electrocution while vandalising Enugu DisCo facility
A suspected vandal has been electrocuted while attempting to tamper with a power installation belonging to MainPower Electricity Distribution Limited in Enugu State.
The incident occurred at a substation located along Independence Avenue in the Independence Layout area of the state. The lifeless body of the yet-to-be-identified suspect was discovered in the early hours of Tuesday within the Akonobi 500KVA Distribution Substation.
According to the Head of Communications of the company, Emeka Ezeh, the suspect, believed to have acted with accomplices, had already removed two intermediate cables from the facility and was attempting to detach a third when electricity supply was suddenly restored, leading to his electrocution.
Ezeh noted that the missing cables suggested that other members of the group had fled the scene before the incident occurred.
He described the development as unfortunate and raised concerns over the growing trend of vandalism targeting electricity infrastructure, stressing that such acts not only affect the company’s operations but also disrupt power supply to customers.
The company urged residents to remain vigilant and support efforts to curb vandalism, noting that protecting electricity installations is a shared responsibility.
Ezeh expressed hope that the incident would serve as a deterrent to others involved in similar acts, warning of the dangers associated with tampering with live electrical equipment.
The remains of the deceased have been evacuated by police officers and deposited at the morgue of the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital.
Incidents of power infrastructure vandalism continue to pose a major challenge to stable electricity supply in Nigeria, with authorities recording numerous cases across the country in recent times.
