The Federal Government has announced the death of Nigeria’s ambassador-designate to Algeria, Mohammed Mahmud Lele, who passed away at the age of 50 after a protracted illness.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed his death in a statement issued in Abuja on Wednesday by its spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, noting that he died in the early hours of April 19, 2026, in Ankara, Türkiye.
According to the ministry, Lele was a career diplomat who, until his death, served as Director of the Middle East and Gulf Division. He had recently been nominated by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and confirmed by the Senate as Nigeria’s ambassador-designate to Algeria.
Born in Gamawa, Bauchi State, in 1976, the late diplomat studied Economics at Bayero University, Kano, and served in several Nigerian missions abroad, including Berlin, Lomé, and Riyadh.
The ministry described him as an officer known for his intellectual depth, professionalism, and commitment to Nigeria’s foreign policy objectives, describing his death as a major loss to the Foreign Service and the nation.
The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dunoma Umar Ahmed, who received his remains at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, described him as a “hardworking and humble officer” whose contributions to diplomacy would be greatly missed.
Lele was buried on Wednesday in Kano according to Islamic rites, with the ministry extending condolences to his family, the people of Bauchi State, and the diplomatic community.
His death comes just as Nigeria continues to implement reforms aimed at strengthening its foreign service and expanding diplomatic engagement across strategic regions.
