Nollywood mourns as actor Patrick Okoye “Energy” passes on

Veteran Nollywood actor and academic, Patrick Okoye, popularly known as “Energy,” has died, plunging the Nigerian entertainment industry and the academic community into mourning.

The news was confirmed on Thursday morning, May 28, 2026, with initial reports emerging through the actor’s official Instagram page around 11:00am.

A post featuring a photograph of the late actor carried a brief but emotional caption that read: “Rest in peace legend.”

The announcement immediately triggered an outpouring of grief from fans and colleagues, many of whom flooded the comment section in shock and disbelief.

Further confirmation came later through a statement shared on Facebook, signed by the Head of the Department of Theatre and Film Studies at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Dr Nkemakonam Aniukwu.

According to the statement, the university community received the news with deep sorrow, describing Okoye as a vibrant personality, respected Nollywood figure, and dedicated lecturer whose influence extended beyond the classroom.

The department noted that his passing has created a significant vacuum among colleagues, students, and all who had the privilege of working closely with him.

Patrick Okoye, who balanced his career in Nollywood with lecturing duties at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, was widely regarded for his contribution to both the creative industry and academic development of young talents.

His death has continued to generate tributes across social media, with fans, students, and industry stakeholders describing him as a mentor, role model, and passionate storyteller.

Further details surrounding the circumstances of his death had not been officially disclosed as of the time of filing this report.
