Obi, Kwankwaso supporters hold unity summit in Abuja amid defection speculations
Supporters of former presidential candidates of the Labour Party (LP) and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, on Friday converged in Abuja for a unity summit aimed at strengthening political alignment ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The gathering, organised under the banner of the “OK Movement,” comes at a time of heightened political negotiations and ongoing speculations over possible defections from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
With the theme “One Voice, One Vision: In Unity We Win,” the summit is being interpreted by observers as part of broader efforts to consolidate opposition forces and build a united front ahead of the next electoral cycle.
According to organisers, the event features eight keynote speakers drawn from across Nigeria’s political and civic space. Among them are elder statesman Buba Galadima, activist Aisha Yesufu, and media entrepreneur Isaac Fayose.
Others billed to speak include Moses Paul, a former ADC chairmanship aspirant, and Adebayo Adefolaseye, the South-West coordinator of the OK Movement.
The summit is taking place amid growing political realignments, with reports suggesting that discussions are ongoing regarding a possible joint political platform for Obi and Kwankwaso.
While no official defection has been announced, the increasing frequency of consultations and coalition-building activities has continued to fuel speculation about a possible shift in Nigeria’s opposition structure ahead of 2027.
Political analysts say the outcome of such engagements may significantly influence the shape of alliances in the build-up to the next general elections.
