Portugal hands Ronaldo 30-Day suspension, €255 fine for walking out of camp
The 41-year-old forward reportedly left the camp on September 30 after becoming unhappy over his expected playing time under coach Jorge Jesus.
Cristiano Ronaldo has been handed a 30-day suspension and fined €255 after leaving the Portuguese national team camp during the UEFA Nations League, the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) announced on Monday.
The 41-year-old forward reportedly left the camp on September 30 after becoming unhappy over his expected playing time under coach Jorge Jesus.
Ronaldo had earlier accused the coach of going back on his word regarding assurances that he would feature in the team’s matches.
The former Manchester United and Real Madrid forward apologised to supporters earlier in October, saying he would accept whatever punishment the federation imposed.
According to the FPF, Ronaldo received the minimum penalty under its regulations, which provide for suspensions ranging from one to six months for players who leave the national team without authorisation.
How Ronaldo’s dispute unfolded
The dispute reportedly began during Portugal’s match against Norway on September 27, when Ronaldo was asked to warm up as a substitute but was not brought onto the pitch.
He subsequently learned that he would not start Portugal’s October 1 fixture against Denmark, prompting his departure from the national team camp.
Ronaldo’s suspension took effect on the day of the Denmark match. As a result, he had already served 19 days of the 30-day ban at the time of the federation’s announcement and was expected to complete the suspension by the end of October.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner remains Portugal’s all-time leading goalscorer and record appearance-maker.
The suspension adds to a turbulent period for the veteran forward, whose status as one of Portugal’s most influential players has often placed his role in the national team under intense scrutiny.
