PSG edge Bayern 5-4 in Champions League semi-final thriller

Published

Paris Saint-Germain produced a stunning display to defeat Bayern Munich 5-4 in a breathtaking first leg of their UEFA Champions League semi-final, with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Ousmane Dembele scoring twice each in what is now the highest-scoring match at this stage of the competition.

The encounter at the Parc des Princes delivered instant drama, as Harry Kane opened scoring for Bayern from the penalty spot before Kvaratskhelia levelled for the hosts. Joao Neves then put PSG ahead, only for Michael Olise to restore parity in a frantic first half.

Dembele’s penalty in stoppage time gave PSG a 3-2 lead at the break, and the French champions extended their advantage after halftime, with Kvaratskhelia and Dembele both completing their braces to make it 5-2.

However, Bayern mounted a spirited comeback as Dayot Upamecano pulled one back before Luis Diaz reduced the deficit further, ensuring the tie remains finely balanced heading into the second leg.

The pulsating contest, widely described as an instant classic, leaves PSG with a slender advantage ahead of the return leg at the Allianz Arena, where Bayern will look to overturn the deficit and reach their first final since 2020.

With a place in the final in Budapest on May 30 at stake, both sides, arguably Europe’s most in-form teams, have set up a decisive showdown in what is shaping up to be one of the most memorable Champions League ties in recent history.
