Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has ordered the immediate employment of children of deceased servicemen in the state to support families of fallen heroes.

The directive was given on Thursday during the Armed Forces Remembrance Day ceremony at the Government House in Port Harcourt, part of activities marking the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day.

Governor Fubara said the move shows the state government’s commitment to the welfare of the Armed Forces, other security agencies, and the families of personnel who gave their lives in the line of duty.

He instructed the Secretary to the State Government, Dr Benibo Anabraba, to ensure the prompt execution of the employment directive.

“I want to mention here that in line with our support, the secretary to the state government has been given a marching order to ensure that the employment promised by the State Government for the children of our veterans would be immediately attended to.

“This is part of our way of showing socio-economic support to the families,” Fubara stated.

The governor assured that Rivers State would sustain its collaboration with military formations operating within the state by offering logistical and welfare assistance aimed at boosting their operational capacity.

Fubara also recognised the sacrifices of troops deployed nationwide, particularly those engaged in counter-insurgency operations in the North-East against Boko Haram and other extremist groups.

He also acknowledged soldiers combating banditry and kidnapping in the North-West and North-Central regions.

He further referenced military operations in the South-East and South-South, noting efforts to curb pipeline vandalism, crude oil theft and other security threats on land and offshore.

The governor paid tribute to Nigerian soldiers who lost their lives during the First and Second World Wars, the Nigerian Civil War, various international peacekeeping missions, and recent internal security operations.

He commended President Bola Tinubu for initiatives aimed at strengthening the Armed Forces, including improved welfare packages, acquisition of modern equipment and steps taken to address internal security challenges.

Earlier, the Chairman of the Nigerian Legion, Rivers State chapter, Kuu Aminkipo Promise, expressed appreciation to the state government for its sustained support to veterans and their families.

He particularly highlighted the launch of the 2026 Emblem Appeal Fund, during which the governor donated N100 million.

Promise described the donation as a reassuring gesture to veterans, widows and dependents of fallen servicemen.
