Senegal rejects CAF order to return AFCON trophy to Morocco
Senegal has reportedly refused to return the Africa Cup of Nations trophy following a controversial decision by the Confederation of African Football to strip them of their title.
CAF ruled that the 2025 AFCON final be declared a walkover, awarding a 3-0 victory to hosts Morocco.
The decision effectively overturns Senegal’s triumph, handing the البطولة to Morocco under disciplinary circumstances. However, Senegal’s stance has sparked fresh tension, as they are yet to comply with CAF’s directive to return the trophy.
The development is expected to trigger further disputes, with questions likely to be raised over the circumstances that led to CAF’s ruling and whether Senegal will challenge the decision.
The football body upheld Morocco’s claim that Senegal’s stoppage time walk-off meant they had broken the laws of the game.
Head coach of the Teranga Lions, Pape Thiaw, ordered his players off the pitch after the hosts were awarded a penalty for the final kick of the match.
According to the UK Sun, despite CAF’s ruling, Senegal are refusing to hand back the trophy, and have described the decision as “unjust, unprecedented, and unacceptable”.
The Secretary General of the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF), Abdoulaye Sow, has also accused CAF of corruption and insisted the trophy would be going nowhere.
