Subsidy: ‘You see why it is good to go to school’ — Atiku taunts Tinubu over fuel policy

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has taken a swipe at President Bola Tinubu over the Federal Government’s 30-day petrol discount, accusing the administration of copying his production subsidy proposal without including the key elements he believes would make it effective.

In a statement directed at the President, Atiku compared Tinubu’s approach to that of a student who copies another student’s examination answers but fails to remove the original student’s name from the paper.

“Bola, you are like a dull student who copied his classmate’s answer,” Atiku said.

He argued that although there was nothing wrong with adopting his proposal, the government had allegedly stripped away the crucial components needed to make the policy work, leaving Nigerians with only a temporary 30-day discount.

“You copied my production subsidy proposal, nothing wrong about that. You stripped away the part that makes it work and handed Nigerians a 30-day discount,” he said.

Atiku also challenged Tinubu to explain what he described as the missing elements of the policy before concluding with a pointed remark about the importance of education.

“Where is the rest of the answer, Bola? You see why it is good to go to school,” he added.

The former vice president’s comments have intensified the political debate over the Federal Government’s temporary fuel price intervention and whether it offers a sustainable solution to the high cost of petrol and transportation.

While Atiku maintains that his proposal offers a more comprehensive approach, the government’s 30-day discount is a temporary measure. Whether the two arrangements are substantially similar will depend on their detailed policy design and implementation.
