Super Eagles reschedule Egypt friendly to December 16
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has confirmed that the Super Eagles will now take on the Pharaohs of Egypt in a practice match on December 16, adjusting the earlier date of December 14 to comply with FIFA’s player-release regulations.
In a statement issued on Monday, the NFF explained that FIFA rules permit clubs to retain their players until December 15 before releasing them for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), necessitating the shift. The federation noted that the encounter is strictly a practice match, with both teams granted permission to field more than the standard five substitutes.
The game is scheduled for 7 p.m. Nigerian time at the Cairo International Stadium, where the Eagles will continue their preparations for the continental showpiece.
Super Eagles head coach, Eric Chelle, recently unveiled a 54-man provisional squad for the tournament.
The announcement was followed by the unexpected retirement of team captain William Troost-Ekong, who is also named in the preliminary list. A final 28-man squad is expected to be released in the coming days.
The national team is slated to open camp in Egypt on December 10, with a series of additional friendly matches planned before AFCON kicks off on December 21.
Nigeria will compete in Group C, alongside Tanzania, Tunisia, and Uganda, as the three-time African champions aim for another continental triumph.
