A 12-year-old girl identified as Nabilat has died after slipping and falling into a domestic well in the Ikoyi community of the Irewolede area in Ilorin West Local Government Area of Kwara State.

The incident occurred around 10:35 a.m. on Saturday when the young girl reportedly went to fetch water and accidentally slipped into the well.

According to a statement issued on Sunday by the Head of Media and Publicity of the Kwara State Fire Service, Hassan Hakeem Adekunle, the agency received a distress call from a resident, identified simply as Mayowa, who witnessed the tragedy.

Firefighters were swiftly deployed to the location and succeeded in recovering Nabilat’s body, which was later handed over to a family member.

“According to the report, the victim went to fetch water and in the process, one of her legs slipped off the ground, which made her tumble into the well,” the statement said.

Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, Prince Falade John Olumuyiwa, expressed deep sorrow over the incident and warned parents and guardians against sending underage children to fetch water from wells, stressing that such actions expose minors to unnecessary risks.

“The general public must be more careful in their day-to-day activities, and parents should desist from sending underage children to fetch water in domestic wells,” he cautioned.

The tragedy has once again highlighted growing concerns over the safety of domestic wells, which remain widely used in several Ilorin communities, especially during the dry season when access to pipe-borne water becomes irregular.
