At least three passengers have been confirmed dead following the derailment of the Warri–Itakpe Train Service (WITS) on Monday, in a tragic incident that has once again raised concerns about railway safety in Nigeria.

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) confirmed the development in a statement issued by its Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Kayode Opeifa, noting that emergency response teams and relevant authorities had been deployed to the scene.

According to the NRC, rescue operations were immediately activated to attend to affected passengers and assess the extent of the incident.

“The Nigerian Railway Corporation confirms that an incident involving the Warri–Itakpe Train Service occurred today. Emergency response teams and relevant authorities are currently at the scene attending to the situation and providing necessary assistance,” the statement said.

The corporation said it is closely monitoring the situation as investigations begin into the cause of the derailment.

The Warri–Itakpe corridor is one of Nigeria’s key rail routes linking the oil-rich Niger Delta region with the North-central axis, and has experienced operational disruptions in the past due to technical and safety concerns.

Authorities are expected to release further details as rescue and recovery efforts continue.
