President Bola Tinubu is set to hold bilateral talks with United Kingdom Prime Minister Keir Starmer during a historic state visit to the UK scheduled for March 17 to 19, according to the official programme released by the British government.
The visit will feature a series of ceremonial activities, high-level diplomatic engagements and interactions with members of the Nigerian diaspora.
Preparations for the visit are expected to begin on March 17 with extensive security sweeps, road closures and rehearsals for the ceremonial procession ahead of the president’s arrival.
President Tinubu is scheduled to arrive in the United Kingdom on March 18, where he will be received by Prince William and Catherine, the Princess of Wales.
A ceremonial welcome will take place along Datchet Road, featuring the playing of both countries’ national anthems and an inspection of a guard of honour.
Following the ceremony, the Nigerian leader will participate in a carriage procession to Windsor Castle, where he will be formally received by King Charles III and Queen Camilla.
The programme for the day includes a formal reception, a 21-gun salute and a state luncheon at St George’s Hall.
Later, Tinubu will hold bilateral discussions with British officials, with talks expected to focus on trade, security cooperation, migration management and port development.
The day’s engagements will conclude with a cultural exchange event showcasing Nigerian artefacts, followed by a state banquet at Windsor Castle.
On March 19, the Nigerian president will begin the day with a private breakfast meeting with the King and Queen before proceeding to London for additional official engagements.
In London, Tinubu will lay a wreath at the Cenotaph in Westminster before meeting Prime Minister Starmer at 10 Downing Street for bilateral talks and a working lunch.
The visit will also include meetings with members of the Nigerian diaspora and the signing of bilateral agreements at Buckingham Palace.
President Tinubu is expected to depart the United Kingdom from RAF Northolt at the end of the three-day visit.
The trip marks Nigeria’s first full state visit to the United Kingdom in 57 years and is expected to reinforce diplomatic relations and deepen economic cooperation between the two countries.
