Who Is Telling the Truth? Confusion clouds reported death of Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo

Confusion has gripped Bayelsa State and the national political scene following conflicting reports about the reported death of Deputy Governor Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo.

Earlier on Thursday, the deputy governor collapsed in his office and was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Yenagoa, where he was said to be in critical condition.

The situation took a dramatic turn when the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) issued a statement announcing his death—despite the Bayelsa State Government insisting that no official confirmation had been made.

In a statement signed by Ini Ememobong, the PDP National Publicity Secretary, the party said it received “with deep shock” the news of Ewhrudjakpo’s passing. The PDP’s message described him as a devoted party man, a principled politician, and a leader of integrity.

> “Senator Ewhrudjakpo was an honest and consistent politician who believed in and practised politics with principle… He was a person of conviction, not convenience,” the statement read.

The party added that his reported passing had thrown its National Working Committee and its Bayelsa chapter into grief, praying for the repose of his soul and extending condolences to the people of the state.

But the Bayelsa State Government has not confirmed his death.
When contacted, Daniel Alabrah, Chief Press Secretary to Governor Douye Diri, said an official statement would only be released once Ewhrudjakpo’s death is fully confirmed.

The uncertainty has left residents and political observers anxiously awaiting official clarification.

Notably, Governor Diri defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) on November 4, while Ewhrudjakpo remained in the PDP, further fuelling political chatter around the incident.

As of press time, the deputy governor’s true condition remains unclear, with Bayelsa awaiting an official pronouncement to put the confusion to rest.
