World Cup hopes dampened as South Africa draws 1–1 with Czechia
South Africa kept their World Cup hopes alive after Teboho Mokoena converted a late penalty to earn Bafana Bafana a 1-1 draw against the Czech Republic in a crucial Group A encounter.
The Czech Republic made a dream start, taking the lead after just five minutes and seven seconds through Michal Sadilek, whose powerful finish became the earliest goal of the tournament so far.
South Africa struggled to create clear opportunities for much of the contest and did not register a shot on target until the 74th minute. However, their persistence paid off when a shot from Thapelo Maseko struck Pavel Sulc’s arm inside the penalty area with seven minutes remaining.
Mokoena stepped up and calmly dispatched the resulting penalty, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way to secure a valuable point for Hugo Broos’ side.
While the draw leaves both South Africa and the Czech Republic with work to do in the race for qualification, neither side is out of contention. With the best third-placed teams also advancing to the knockout stages, both nations remain firmly in the hunt for a place in the last 32.
South Africa will now face South Korea in their final group match, while the Czech Republic take on co-hosts Mexico in what promises to be a decisive round of fixtures.
